Our Experts for AI in Healthcare and Medicine in Canada
Driving Innovation in Precision Medicine and Drug Discovery
Holger Fröhlich’s expertise lies in precision medicine and early drug discovery, including systems medicine. He hereby develops AI-based strategies for the identification of target structures for future drug development as well as AI methods that advance precision medicine and the success of clinical studies. In driving forward Data Science approaches for applications in biomedicine, he is also working on foundation models and supporting the trustworthiness of AI.
Building Robust AI Systems for Clinical Practice
Michael Kamp develops theoretically grounded and privacy-preserving machine learning methods for high-stakes medical applications, integrating causality for counterfactual reasoning and explainability, including in foundation models. Associated with University Medicine Essen, he works closely with clinicians to build robust AI systems for early detection and reliable decision support. He actively seeks partners to translate advanced AI research into clinical practice.
Supporting Clinical Sleep Laboratories through Deep Learning
Matthias Jakobs develops novel methods for the automatic analysis of polysomnography (PSG) data in clinical sleep laboratory settings. Specifically, the team aims to automate the annotation of PSG recordings to identify sleep stages, apneas, and other clinically relevant events. Manual annotation is costly, time-consuming, and prone to human error. With the availability of large-scale datasets, modern deep learning approaches offer promising solutions to support clinicians in this demanding task.
Joined by Clinical Partners
Lamarr works closely with clinical partners, including the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM), part of the University Medicine Essen and the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the University Hospital Bonn (UKB). Together, we open up new opportunities for applying AI in healthcare. Joining us from our partners is:
Bringing AI Algorithms into Clinical Practice at Scale
Moon Kim’s research aims to advance precision diagnostics by integrating diverse, multimodal medical data. This includes unstructured clinical notes, standardized health data (in FHIR), and quantitative imaging biomarkers from scans like PET-CT. By combining these sources, Moon develops context-aware AI models that can understand the complex relationships between clinical, textual, and imaging information. The goal of his work is to improve diagnostic accuracy, support individualized treatment plans, and develop new paradigms in patient care.
