The Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jakob Rehof as its new director, effective April 1, 2024.
Professor Rehof brings a wealth of experience from both academia and industry to his new role. Since 2006, he has served as a Professor of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University, where he also holds the Chair of Software Engineering. His commitment to advancing the field of computer science is evident in his extensive research contributions.
Having obtained his doctoral degree from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen, Professor Rehof’s academic journey has taken him across the globe, including research stints at Stanford University and employment at Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA, USA. He has held significant roles at the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST) in Dortmund, serving as director from 2006 to 2021 and leading research strategy since 2021.
In addition to his technical expertise, Professor Rehof boasts a diverse academic background, including studies in Classical Philology and Philosophy, underscoring his interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving and innovation. His outstanding contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards such as the CAV Award in Computer Aided Verification in 2023.
As an outstanding researcher, Rehof has been a Principal Investigator at the Lamarr Institute since its inception. After the retirement of founding director Prof. Katharina Morik, he also took on the position of Chair for the research area Trustworthy AI.
Professor Rehof joins the existing directorate comprising Professors Stefan Wrobel (University of Bonn), Christian Bauckhage (Fraunhofer IAIS), and Michael ten Hompel (Fraunhofer IML).
Up to this point, Prof. Michael ten Hompel had represented TU Dortmund University on the Lamarr Institute’s board of directors and continued to promote its visions. After his retirement, he will remain on the board of directors, from now on as representative of the Fraunhofer IML.
