Lamarr partners Fraunhofer IAIS and the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education qualify teachers for AI in the classroom – initiative teaches application, basic knowledge, and critical reflection

In November 2025, the Ministry of Education of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS will launch the two-year “AI4Teachers” program. The program aims to qualify teachers to use Artificial Intelligence in the classroom. To this end, multipliers will first be trained to pass on their knowledge to up to 100 other teachers throughout the state. As well as teaching them how to use AI tools, the program will focus in particular on imparting basic knowledge about the technology and promoting critical and responsible thinking about its use.

AI4Teachers forms part of the AI4Schools educational initiative, developed by Fraunhofer IAIS and the Fraunhofer Big Data AI Alliance in collaboration with the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The initiative brings together schools, companies, and organizations to prepare the next generation for this key technology.

Education Minister Sven Teuber emphasizes the importance of thoughtful use: “Our teachers want to know how they can make good use of AI, but they still have many questions about it. Through the AI4Teachers program, we are trying to answer as many of these questions as possible.” Responsible use of technology is crucial in this regard: “It’s about critical reflection and constantly questioning AI. This is particularly important for our teachers because it is also a key future skill for students.” This creates a protected space for the prudent use of Artificial Intelligence in schools. “One thing is clear: AI will never replace teachers. It only provides support where it makes educational sense and is necessary, reducing the administrative burden. This frees up more time for teachers to focus on teaching and learning processes with students.”

From a scientific perspective, Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel, head of Fraunhofer IAIS and co-director of the Lamarr Institute, adds: “With our AI4Schools education initiative, we are preparing the next generation for our technology-driven world. It’s not just about being able to use AI tools competently; it’s even more so about understanding the technical basics – knowledge that is necessary in order to critically assess the opportunities and risks of AI applications, and to use them responsibly. Through our multiplier model, we empower teachers to not only incorporate AI into their daily work, but also to impart knowledge about AI.”

AI4Teachers thus combines practical training with a scientific foundation and helps to ensure that schools are safe space for the reflective use of Artificial Intelligence.
