The Future of Medicine aboard MS Wissenschaft
Meet the Scientist and Digital Twin Elena
How does artificial intelligence make medical decisions, and how can it distinguish meaningful causal relationships from misleading patterns in data? Visitors to the Meet the Scientist event aboard MS Wissenschaft in Cologne will have the opportunity to explore these questions together with researchers from the Lamarr Institute for Mashine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, TU Dortmund, and the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) at University Medicine Essen. At the heart of the event is the interactive exhibit Digital Twin Medicine, which uses the virtual patient Elena to introduce current research on causal AI in an engaging and accessible way.

Exploring causal AI through a virtual patient
Working with Elena’s digital twin, visitors investigate a medical case, develop diagnostic hypotheses, and make treatment decisions of their own. Along the way, they discover why reliable medical AI must go beyond identifying statistical patterns and instead understand cause-and-effect relationships. Through interactive challenges, participants learn to recognize misleading correlations and help the AI arrive at better-informed decisions.
The exhibit was developed under the scientific leadership of Prof. Dr. Michael Kamp (TU Dortmund, Lamarr Institute) in collaboration with researchers from IKIM at University Medicine Essen. It demonstrates how advances in causal machine learning and digital twins could support clinical decision-making and contribute to more personalized healthcare in the future.
Meet the Scientist
During the event, researchers involved in developing the exhibit will be available to answer questions about causal AI, digital twins, and the future of AI in medicine. Beyond experiencing the exhibit itself, visitors are invited to discuss the scientific ideas behind the project and learn how current research is shaping the next generation of intelligent healthcare technologies.
