Call for Papers: 2nd Dortmund Conference on Philosophy and Society

The Department of Philosophy and Political Science at TU Dortmund University and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are jointly organizing the 2nd Dortmund Conference on Philosophy and Society, taking place on October 1–2, 2025, in Dortmund, Germany. Some of the conference’s organizers include Prof. Dr. Eva Schmidt, Principal Investigator for Trustworthy AI at the Lamarr Institute, and Prof. Dr. Florian J. Boge, Associated Principal Investigator at the Lamarr Institute. Scholars are invited to submit contributions to this event, which will feature Kate Vredenburgh (London School of Economics), whose research explores the philosophy of social science, political philosophy, and the philosophy of technology. The first day of the conference will be dedicated to up to six presentations selected through a call for papers. Kate Vredenburgh will engage directly with the contributions and deliver a public evening lecture. The second day will feature a student workshop on her work.

Conference Themes

We welcome contributions that align with Vredenburgh’s research, particularly on:

• Explainable AI – perspectives from ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of science
• The right to explanation
• Algorithmic bias and algorithmic fairness
• The impact of AI on institutions
• The impact of AI on the future work

Submissions engaging directly with Vredenburgh’s work are especially encouraged, but broader perspectives on these topics are also welcome.

Submission Guidelines

• Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and must be prepared for blind review.
• Submissions should be sent as PDF attachments to Paul Klur (pa*******@tu*********.de), using the subject line “CfP Vredenburgh”.
• Deadline: May 31, 2025.
• Limited funding may be available to support travel and accommodation for selected speakers.
