Author

Simon Müller received his M.Sc. degree in Life Science Informatics from
the University of Bonn in 2021 and will complete his second degree in
Human Medicine at Maastricht University in 2026. Drawing on this
interdisciplinary background (and vast amounts of coffee), he is
pursuing a PhD on the topic “Learning what is relevant: Attention-based
analysis of high-resolution ophthalmic images and videos”. Deep learning
methods from computer vision are applied to medical data to screen for
disease (e.g. diabetic retinopathy) or improve surgical outcomes in
cataract extraction surgery. His doctoral research is jointly supervised
by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Schultz at the b-it and Department of Computer
Science II, and PD Dr. Maximilian Wintergerst from the Department of
Ophthalmology at the University Eye Clinic Bonn.
