Andrea Mastropietro is a Junior Research Group Leader at the University of Bonn and Lamarr Institute, where he leads the LAIF junior research group within the Department of Life Science Informatics and Data Science. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Data Science Center of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan, as part of a Lamarr-NAIST cross-appointment.

Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bonn (2025) and an awardee of the Lamarr Stipendium Program fellowship (2024). He received his Ph.D. Summa cum Laude from Sapienza University of Rome in 2024. His Ph.D. thesis “Toward Explainable Biomedical Deep Learning” was awarded the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award on Big Data & Data Science by the National Lab on Data Science of the National Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics of Italy. He holds a M.Sc. in Engineering in Computer Science (2019) and a B.Sc. in Computer and Control Engineering (2017).

His research interests are in the field of graph learning and explainable artificial intelligence in the life sciences, with applications in chemoinformatics and bioinformatics. Lately, he has been focusing on the development of graph generation techniques for drug design and agentic systems
