Meeyoung (Mia) Cha joins the Lamarr Institute as an Associated Principal Investigator. She serves as a Scientific Director at the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP) in Bochum and holds a joint position as a Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
A leading figure in data science and computational social science, Meeyoung Cha’s research establishes foundational frameworks for understanding social information and human-machine interactions. Her pioneering work spans critical domains including misinformation, meter-level poverty mapping, fraud detection, and the dynamics of long-tail content.
Meeyoung Cha is an ACM Distinguished Member and the recipient of multiple Test-of-Time Awards, the Hong Jin-Ki Creator Award, and the Korean Young Information Scientist Award. Prior to joining MPI, Meeyoung was a Chief Investigator at the Institute for Basic Science in Korea and a Visiting Professor at Meta(Facebook). She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from KAIST in 2008.
