The Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence welcomes Prof. Sebastian Peitz as a new Principal Investigator. Starting in the winter semester of 2024/2025, he will lead the “Safe Autonomous Systems” research group at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dortmund University. The professorship, funded by the KION Group with one million euros, focuses on researching reliable, resilient, and safe autonomous systems—a groundbreaking topic for logistics and industrial production.

In his research, Prof. Peitz combines methods from Artificial Intelligence and optimization to ensure the safety and efficiency of complex dynamic systems. His work particularly focuses on developing trustworthy autonomous systems, such as self-driving vehicles or fully automated logistics solutions.

Prof. Peitz brings an impressive academic background: in addition to serving as a junior professor at Paderborn University, he led a BMBF-funded AI junior research group and recently received one of the prestigious ERC Starting Grants for his research on safe and data-efficient reinforcement learning.

The collaboration between the Lamarr Institute and Prof. Peitz strengthens the interface between basic research and application-oriented development, particularly in logistics and industrial automation. His professorship not only expands TU Dortmund University’s academic profile but also provides new momentum for collaboration with leading partners from science and industry.

By integrating Prof. Peitz into its team, the Lamarr Institute continues to set new standards for innovative and responsible research in artificial intelligence.
