DiWoDo 2023: Regional and International Interest in Lamarr Institute’s AI Research

LAMARR News DiWoDo - Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

As part of the Digital Week Dortmund (DiWoDo), the Lamarr Institute contributed to three program items. In addition to its own event on sustainability in the age of Artificial Intelligence with the participation of leading AI experts from North Rhine-Westphalia, Lamarr researchers played a key role in shaping a transatlantic panel on the real-world innovations of AI and a discussion format on generative AI. The interest of participants from the region as well as international delegations highlighted the far-reaching appeal of Lamarr research.

Sustainability in the Age of AI

On September 25, the Lamarr Institute hosted the event “Sustainability in the Age of AI” at its premises at TU Dortmund University. Visitors entered into an exchange with experts from the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, the Meinungsmonitor Künstliche Intelligenz (MeMo:KI), the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and the competence platform KI.NRW. During a demonstration of the interactive AI Design Sprint™ and in discussions with researchers at several demonstrator stations, the participants learned interesting facts as well as the latest results from research on sustainability with and of AI.

A Transatlantic Fireside Chat – Real-World Innovations of AI

Innovations through AI were also the topic on the evening of September 25. Lamarr researchers Prof. Dr. Eva Schmidt and Dr. Sebastian Buschjäger discussed the parallels and opportunities of transatlantic AI research together with Prof. Dr. Rebecca Nugent (Carnegie Mellon University). The experts from Dortmund and Pittsburgh showed the promising cooperation potentials of the two locations, which look back on a similar development history, and gave the audience insights into the transfer of leading AI research into economy, labor market and society.

A recording of the fireside chat, which took place in the context of the DIVR XR Science Award ceremony, is available online (from 07:24:52).
