Certificate Course: WATER AI

Strating in the winter semster 2026/27 the Lamarr Institute, TU Dortmund University and the Wilo Group launch the interdisciplinary certificate program WATER AI that combines content from computer science, urban planning, architecture, and civil engineering with a mentoring program offered by the Wilo Group. The program focuses on applications of artificial intelligence and data-driven methods in the context of water, infrastructure, and sustainable urban and spatial development.

The certificate program comprises at least 20 credit points (CP) and is structured over two semesters.

Registration deadline: October 21, 2026

Why WATER AI

Global challenges such as climate change, urbanization, water scarcity, extreme rainfall events, and flood protection require new, interdisciplinary approaches. At the same time, digital technologies – in particular smart city concepts, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and AI governance – are fundamentally transforming the planning, control, and management of urban spaces and infrastructure.

The goal of this certificate course is to provide participants with an integrated understanding of water, infrastructure, and urban development systems in the context of digital and climate change. The course equips participants to analyze, model, and adaptively manage complex interrelationships between natural resources, technical infrastructure, and urban transformation processes using AI methods (e.g., machine learning, predictive modeling, optimization algorithms), data-driven simulation approaches, and digital twins.
