AI Colloquium in May

The AI Colloquium, organized by the Lamarr Institute, the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security (RC Trust) and the Center for Data Science & Simulation at TU Dortmund University (DoDas), provides a platform for leading researchers to present groundbreaking work in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. These 90-minute sessions, which usually take place on Thursdays at 10 a.m. c.t., unlike other colloquia, focus on interactive dialog and international collaboration and include one-hour lectures and 30-minute Q&A sessions. The colloquium will be held mainly in English. The hybrid format of the colloquium ensures that all interested parties can participate in person in the lecture hall at Fraunhofer Straße 25 in Dortmund or online via our Lamarr YouTube channel. On May 27th, the AI Colloquium welcomes Stefan Mandt as its next speaker with a keynote entitled “From Entropy to Artistry: on Thermodynamics and Generative AI”, in which Mandt will explore the deep connections between diffusion models and physics.

Stefan Mandt

Stephan Mandt is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Statistics at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on deep generative modeling, uncertainty quantification, neural data compression, and AI for science. Previously, he led the Machine Learning group at Disney Research and held postdoctoral positions at Princeton and Columbia University. Mandt holds a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cologne and has received numerous awards, including the NSF CAREER Award and the German Research Foundation’s Mercator Fellowship. He is a Kavli Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and serves as an Action Editor for the Journal of Machine Learning Research. Stephan’s research is supported by various organizations including NSF, DARPA, and Disney.
