AI Colloquium with Dr. Burim Ramosaj on “Bridging Academia and Industry: The Google Student Researcher Program (PhD)”

On Friday, October 9, 2026, Dr. Burim Ramosaj from Google in Zurich will give a presentation on “Bridging Academia and Industry: The Google Student Researcher Program (PhD)” at TU Dortmund University.

About the AI Colloquium

The AI Colloquium, organized by the Lamarr Institute, the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security (RC Trust) and the Center for Data Science & Simulation at TU Dortmund University (DoDas), provides a platform for leading researchers to present groundbreaking work in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. These 90-minute sessions, unlike other colloquia, focus on interactive dialog and international collaboration and include one-hour lectures and 30-minute Q&A sessions. The colloquium will be held mainly in English.

About the Talk

For PhD researchers seeking to gain industry research experience, the path may not be clear. How does the Google Student Researcher Program operate? What does the application process entail, and which academic qualifications are significant? Dr. Burim Ramosaj will address these questions during his guest lecture at TU Dortmund University. His presentation will offer practical insights into a program that enables doctoral researchers to engage in exploratory research projects at Google. Dr. Ramosaj will outline the program’s structure, relevant academic and technical qualifications, and the application and interview processes. He will also cover practical aspects such as project duration, location, time commitment, and how applicants can effectively present their research background and experience.

About the Speaker

Burim Ramosaj is not new to providing orientation in research funding and application processes. During his time at TU Dortmund University, he publicly shared his experiences in this area. In a 2022 interview, he discussed his successful application to the NRW KI-Starter program and offered practical advice for researchers considering similar endeavors. His return to Dortmund now brings an additional perspective: the transition from academic research to the industry. Burim Ramosaj earned his doctorate in statistics at TU Dortmund University under the supervision of Prof. Markus Pauly and subsequently served as a postdoctoral researcher in his group. His research concentrated on statistical inference using machine-learning methods, including work on Random Forests. Currently, Burim Ramosaj is employed at Google in Zurich, where he serves as the Tech Lead for Forecasting and Operations in Trust & Safety Data Science, in addition to his role as a Senior Research Data Scientist. His work involves applying statistical methods, machine learning, and AI to address issues related to forecasting and data-driven decision-making in Trust & Safety.
