Lamarr partner institution Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML and its managing director, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael ten Hompel, received the Dortmund Dialog Prize 2024. On February 6 they were honored for their significant contributions to the structural transformation and innovation prowess of the city of Dortmund. The award was presented by the Society for the Promotion of Structural Change in the Working Society (GFS), acknowledging Prof. ten Hompel’s active and communicative role in the Dortmund community. The award ceremony featured a laudation by Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Dortmund Dialog Prize is presented biennially by the GFS to recognize outstanding contributions to structural change and dialogue in the city. Prof. Michael ten Hompel, who has been the managing director of Fraunhofer IML for 20 years and director of the Lamarr Institute since 2022, was commended for his instrumental role in fostering responsible use of technology in science, business, and society, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

In his presentation titled “Learning What We Don’t Understand – AI and its Application in Logistics,” Lamarr director Prof. ten Hompel highlighted the importance of not only AI continuously learning but also people learning how to appropriately handle the new technology. He shared insights into the sensible application of AI, especially in the logistics sector, which is also one of Lamarr’s research areas

Prof. Michael ten Hompel has been a key figure in advancing the scientific and technological development of Dortmund. A bridge-builder between science, business, and society, he plays a vital role in dialogue and structural development in the city.

Ten Hompel’s notable achievements include being named “Citizen of the Ruhr Area 2018,” receiving the Innovation Prize of the State of NRW in 2020, and being awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 2023 for his outstanding contributions to the scientific field.

The Dortmund Dialog Prize aims to honor individuals and institutions contributing to innovative and peaceful development in Dortmund’s working world. Prof. ten Hompel’s recognition further underscores the importance of his work in promoting responsible technology use and fostering a dialogue between different sectors.
