The Bundesverband Direktvertrieb Deutschland (BDD) recognized Vahid Sadiri Javadi from the Lamarr Institute for his innovative work on OpinionConv, a conversational AI solution that grounds product search interactions in authentic user narratives.

Lamarr Institute researcher Vahid Sadiri Javadi has been honored with the WissenschaftsAward from the Bundesverband Direktvertrieb Deutschland (BDD) for his groundbreaking contributions to Conversational AI. His awarded project, titled “OpinionConv: Conversational Product Search with Grounded Opinions,” tackles a critical gap in current AI systems by integrating subjective, experience-based narratives to support human-like interactions.

Enhancing Conversational AI with Real-World Opinions

OpinionConv leverages consumer product reviews to ground AI responses in authentic subjective experiences, enabling more personalized and natural conversations during product search interactions. By focusing on the nuanced needs and concerns expressed in these reviews, OpinionConv bridges the divide between fact-based responses and human-centered sales conversations. This approach enhances user experiences in areas like online retail and customer support by offering informed, opinion-based recommendations.

A Collaborative Effort with Leading AI Experts

Vahid’s research was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Lucie Flek, Lamarr’s Area Chair Natural Language Processing (NLP) and head of the Data Science and Language Technology group at the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it) at University of Bonn, and Prof. Dr. Martin Potthast, who holds the hessian.AI Chair for Deep Semantic Learning at the University of Kassel. Their combined expertise in data science, language technologies, and deep semantic learning was instrumental in the success of this interdisciplinary project.

A Human Touch to Conversational AI

OpinionConv’s novelty lies in its ability to simulate realistic sales conversations by grounding responses in authentic consumer narratives. The system’s performance was validated through user studies, which confirmed the realistic and valuable nature of the generated interactions. This innovative framework surpasses traditional fact-oriented systems by incorporating relatable, experience-based narratives.

Reflecting on this recognition, Vahid expressed, “Winning the WissenschaftsAward is an incredible honor and motivates me to continue exploring innovations that bring a human touch to AI interactions. My goal is to bridge the gap between conversational information-seeking, personalization, and evaluation.”

Lamarr Institute’s Commitment to High-Impact Research

This achievement exemplifies the Lamarr Institute’s dedication to advancing trustworthy and resource-efficient AI research. With OpinionConv, Vahid Sadiri Javadi and his collaborators are pushing the boundaries of what conversational AI can achieve, enabling AI to resonate with users through authentic, grounded narratives.
