Certificate Course: Learn Responsible AI from and with Leading Researchers

Artificial intelligence is transforming science, industry and society. As AI systems become increasingly powerful, ensuring their responsible development and application has become one of the defining challenges of our time.

The Responsible AI Certificate Course, jointly organised by the German National AI Centers, brings together researchers from diverse disciplines to explore the technical, legal, ethical and societal dimensions of Responsible AI. Through research-led teaching, interdisciplinary dialogue and collaborative learning, participants gain new perspectives that support responsible AI research and innovation.

Why Responsible AI?

Responsible AI is more than a checklist of technical requirements or legal obligations. It requires understanding how technological innovation interacts with ethical principles, legal frameworks and societal expectations.

This certificate course approaches Responsible AI as a systemic concept. Rather than focusing on a single perspective, it examines how technical robustness, fairness, explainability, governance, regulation and human responsibility work together to enable trustworthy AI.

By learning across disciplinary boundaries, participants develop a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities that accompany modern AI research.

Learning Responsible AI from Different Perspectives

Responsible AI cannot be understood from a single discipline alone.

Throughout four interactive sessions, researchers from different academic backgrounds teach together, presenting complementary perspectives on current challenges in AI research. This collaborative teaching approach encourages participants to compare viewpoints, question assumptions and engage in meaningful discussions with experts and peers.

Rather than providing a fixed catalogue of answers, the programme strengthens participants’ ability to critically reflect on Responsible AI in their own research context and beyond.

Who Should Participate?

The course welcomes participants from across the AI research community.

It is particularly suited for:

  • PhD candidates
  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Senior researchers
  • Researchers from the German National AI Centers
  • Researchers from participating universities

Applications are also welcome from experienced AI practitioners, researchers from related disciplines and professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of Responsible AI.

The interdisciplinary composition of the cohort is an essential part of the learning experience, creating opportunities for dialogue across research fields and sectors.
