To mark this year’s International Women’s Day, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) hosted an event on March 7, 2025 entitled “Tomorrow’s technology, yesterday’s problems: What to do about the gender gap in artificial intelligence”. The event in Berlin focused on the topic of gender equality in science and research. The guests in attendance were welcomed by Claudia Müller, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMBF, and Dr. Tina Klüwer, Head of the Research Department for Technological Sovereignty and Innovation at the BMBF.
In a keynote speech, Kenza Ait Si Abbou Lyadini, CTO and Board Member at Fiege, addressed the mechanisms and advantages of strengthening the participation of women in AI. The keynote speech formed the starting point for a central panel discussion. The invited experts hereby discussed the question of how we can tackle the gender gap in AI and inspire young women and girls to study and pursue a career in AI in the long term. One of the panelists was Prof. Dr. Lucie Flek, Chair of Natural Language Processing at the Lamarr Institute and head of the BMBF-funded AI junior research group Dynamically Social Natural Language Processing for Discourse Analysis (DynSoDA), who helped shape the panel with her extensive expertise in research and industry.
During a subsequent get-together, interested participants exchanged ideas with Lucie Flek and Lamarr’s Head of Networking Ann-Kathrin Oster who moderated the topic island “Promoting young talent for women in AI”. The topic was met with lively interest and sparked lively exchanges on a wide range of funding programs and promotion formats for girls and women.
